Anton du Beke, one of my favourite professional dancers, is never seen without a silk handkerchief in the top pocket of his jacket.
It’s a fashion trend that died out twenty years ago, but is making a comeback among the smart set, and takes me back to the glamour days of the Scarlet Pimpernel when men dressed more flamboyantly than the women.
Pure silk handkerchiefs are amazingly inexpensive, and provided you avoid paisley and silly patterns will add a touch of class to your dressy occasion for very little effort.
And preparing them to wear is a doddle too.
• open the silk handkerchief out flat on a table
• pick it up by the middle, where all the folds meet, so that all the corners hang down
• hold this middle part and thrust it to the bottom of your jacket pocket, leaving the corners peeping gently over the lip of the pocket
• finally adjust to leave the exact amount showing that suits your mood: long and floppy corners hanging down when you’re showy and extravagant; or a couple of centimetres only showing if you don’t want to be noticed.
Men’s clothing can be dull, but wearing a pocket handkerchief is one fashion trend that is sure to liven it up.
My guy Dan has taken to reading my His Fashion Eye blog and following the men’s fashion tips to show me he’s up to date with the very latest in mens fashion. So Dan, NOT THE PAISLEY!
