Remember the 80s? Well those stonewashed jeans combined with an equally bleached denim jacket can stay safely tucked away in your memory!

Thankfully the head to toe denim trend is taking more of a shophisticated stance in 2010 and if you’ve been paying attention to the shop windows recently you can’t miss it. A dark, lightweight denim fabric adds a note of refinement to an otherwise fairly casual look. Boring? Not at all. It doesn’t always have to match and actually it shouldn’t. Part of the fun of this trend is mixing different shades of blue; once a big fashion faux pas but now all the range. Add another layer of intrigue to your outfit by combining different styles as well. A sharp blazer with a pair of heavily distressed jeans? You’re good to go!

Most of us need to dress up quite a few times over the festive season – black tie for him, ballgown for her – and let’s face it while us girls wear a different outfit for each one and then some, the guys usually turn up in the same old tux and black tie.

“Have you seen the price of a tux?” I hear you cry. “But you told us to throw our paisley ties away”.

Relax! I’m not saying you need as many tuxes and men’s ties as we girls need dresses. And for the stylish guy, they’d all look very similar anyway.

Every man should have a good polo t shirt in his wardrobe. Not the £4.99 ones from a supermarket, but a nice designer polo t shirt. Why? Here’s why!

1 – You can look smart but casual at the same time. Ok. So smart casual isn’t exactly hard to come by, but the collar on a polo t shirt gives it that extra edge of smartness over a normal t shirt and an extra casualness over a shirt. Simple eh?

2 – No one wears polo t shirts. Take a look around a club and you’ll see people in t shirts or shirts, but very few in polo t shirts. You don’t want to be one of the crowd do you? Why look like everyone else when you can spend £50 on a good polo t shirt and look individual and cool?

3 – A polo t shirt can be more versatile than you think - whether you want to look like toff like Prince Harry in Hackett, or cool like Justin Timberlake in Abercrombie and Fitch.

4 – Girls love polo t shirts. I don’t know if it’s ‘cos they’re a bit smart, or because they look like rugby jerseys, but whenever blokes bring their girlfriends into my shop, more often than not they leave with a polo t shirt. And that can’t hurt, can it guys?

5 – Because I say so! I sell clothes for a living, I know what I’m talking about and I say you should buy one. Go on. What are you waiting for?

1- it’s freezing, obviously, so people don’t wear t shirts - they’re thinking of jumpers, coats and fleeces instead.

2 - it’s party season, not casual seasons. Men are looking for smart, festive shirts, instead of casual t shirts

Despite this fall in demand, I think this time of year is a great time to pick up nice retro t shirts, especially because the stores are getting rid of summer stock in the seasonal sales.

A retro t shirt under your sweater or shirt will keep you warm, and provide a bit of extra edge to your wardrobe. It’s like wearing a vest to keep you all toasty and warm, but as anyone with any knowledge of men’s fashion knows, no one wears a vest any more. A good t shirt is a nice way to stay warm without the perils of wearing an unfashionable vest. And because a retro t shirt is a cool piece of clothing in itself, if you end up somewhere hot you can whip your sweater off and reveal a bit of retro coolness.
It’s not rocket science to layer your clothes at this time of year, but hiding a retro t shirt under your other layers is a great combination

You’d be amazed how good a pink tie can look with the right outfit.
I don’t mean a ready-made pink bow tie on elastic that tells people you failed your audition for Coco the Clown. And I don’t mean a shocking pink tie monstrosity that glows in the dark and lets your mates spot you half a mile away.

No, I mean a top quality pink silk tie, in a muted shade of pink that shows you’ve got taste and style when it comes to men’s fashion– or that you’re a follower of His Fashion Eye, which amounts to the same thing.

Skinny ties look really good in pink, though with a pastel or white cotton shirt rather than black which would make the tie stand out too much. You’ll find a few designer ties in pink, though I think the pink tie makes enough of a statement on its own and wouldn’t recommend a pink designer tie unless you’re totally sold on designer ties.

Add a dark pure wool suit or jacket, and you’ll glow with quiet sophistication. The problem with ‘His fashion eye’ is that it’s getting too popular and you need to move fast to stay ahead. Get your pink tie now, as in a couple of weeks, everybody who reads my shopping blogs will be wearing one.

So how come 80s t shirts are back in fashion when the 80s were so dodgy? Anyway they certainly are, and the steady stream of students are coming into my shop looking for 80s nostalgia.

Lets clear up what I mean by 80s t shirts. There’s a big difference, I can tell you.

Retro designs
Proper retro styles that are copied from t shirts originally sold in the 80s. Some have bold colours, others are baggier and don’t have the tighter fit we’re used to now, but these t shirts are all a bit of fun. Brands like from Ted Baker and Lambretta are a good place to look for these tees, which are generally blank or have subtle 80s designs. And don’t scream “look at me” like the logo t shirts

80s logos
Modern t shirts with an 80s logo printed on, like Ghostbusters or Thundercats are perfect for the pub or lounging around the house. You can get them anywhere, and the web is full of t shirt websites, packed with 80s logos.
Don’t wear them on a big night out though! They can provide a laugh for your mates or a word of recognition, but you’ll always be remembered as “that guy with the Ghostbusters t shirt”.

I’m a personal shopper, so I know what I’m doing when it comes to men’s fashion. Men like to think they have a fashion eye, but believe me, there are few of them don’t need the woman’s guiding hand when it comes to men’s fashion.

Look at the wedding I went to on Sunday, one of my oldest friends. It was tail coats, top hats, the full works, and with the sun shining down, the bride looked radiant. All the men wore crisp white shirts with wing collars and bow ties – wonderful, you may think. And so did I till I noticed that half the poor dears were wearing their bow ties behind the wings of the collars.

Well the first thing I tell any of my clients buying men’s shirts with wing collars, is that the bow always goes in front, and the wings behind. Helps to keep the wings in place, looks much smarter, and in etiquette terms is the “right” thing to do.

Anyway, a quick tour of the guys concerned, with a big smile and a “you look lovely, let me straighten your tie” soon had everything in order, and nobody any the wiser. And on the photographs, not a single collar was out of place!

Would you have spotted it?

Do you sometimes struggle to find something unique? Well look no further for tailored shirts and handy mini sized pockets for those mini sized business cards.

I recently met Robert at one of the London Bloggers Meetup events whose teeny business cards intrigued me.

I was hooked when he described how he designed a mini-pocket to attach to his shirts for the cards to easily slot into. The cards themselves, designed by Moo, show the unique design of Robert’s shirt on the backso as to remind anyone he meets who the cards belong to.

Have a look at Robert’s wine blog to see for yourself. Check out the tiny camouflaged pocket embedded in his designer shirt which holds his mini business cards. He is wearing a design by Blacqua, a South East London based tailor best known for its distinctive flamboyant men’s shirts.

What better way to carry your cards to networking evenings and work related events than making your own miniscule pocket on the front of your shirt. It saves you from bulky trouser pockets and the need to rifle through your jacket everytime you’re looking for one. If you’re away on business in warmer climates than that which the UK has to offer (not that hard to find) then it can also eliminate the need for a jacket altogether.

It definitely gives you the edge when contacts are racking their brain the next morning to remember whose business card belonged to who.

If you’re not that handy with a sewing machine, however, the company also does card holders. But I’m completely 100% in favour of the pocket - now there’s a style I’m not going to forget easily.
